3rd Baltic Sea Summer School on Epilepsy, Kiel, Germany, July 12-17, 2009

As part of the educational agenda of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) in Europe, and on initiative of the ILAE chapters around the Baltic Sea, a new series of epilepsy summer schools under the auspices of the European Epilepsy Academy (EUREPA) has been successfully launched in 2007 in Lithuania and is expected to take place in turn in the 10 countries with ILAE chapters bordering the Baltic Sea. The 2nd BSSSE, organized in collaboration with the Danish Epilepsy Society, took place in 2008 with great success. The 3rd BSSSE will be held in Kiel, Germany, from July 12-17, 2009.

At the BSSSE, an international group of up to 40 post-graduates will during 4,5 days in a special setting meet and interact with a group of senior epileptologists who will give update lectures on selected, clinical relevant topics in epilepsy.
The target group is junior medical doctros up to the age of 40 who regularly care for patients with epilepsy, consider subspecialization in epileptology, or have taken their first steps towards a career as epileleptologists. The BSSSE addresses doctors primarily from the Baltic Sea region, but applicants from other countries may also be accepted in case there are still places available after the priority deadline.

The course, on completion, will enable the participants to receive the up-to-date information and expert opinion on the main topics of clinical epileptology, to improve their competence and to gain practical practical skills in the diagnostic work-up and decision-making concerning the management of different aspects of pediatric and adult epileptology.

The tutorials held by experienced epileptologists through interactive education in small gorups are expected to provoke vivid discussions and to stimulate a critical diagnostic approach, especially regarding the EEG, neuroimaging and pharmacotherapy. Didactic cases provided by tutors in case-oriented learning will be useful to students in dealing with clinical problems in daily practice. In addition to these and the lectures, and in order to stimulate discussion with tutors and peers, the participants are expected to present own research or thought-provoking cases they have met. By presenting their own case or scientific report during the group sessions, the participants are encouraged to improve the competence and confidence in lecturing and teaching. It is hoped that, beyong educational purposes, the encounter of inter-regional groups of juniors and senior epileptologists at the BSSSE will generate substantial clinical and research cooperation around the Baltic Sea and beyond.

The course is being organized by Peter Wolf (Course director, ILAE president) and Ulrich Stephani as representative of the German Society for Epileptology. Course secretaries are Ruta Mameniskiene (Lithuania) and Petra Novotny, Eurepa office (Germany). The BSSSE 3 will be given in English.
Registration fee: 800 Euro. The fee includes accomodation (in twin room), full board, and access to all educational activities (lectures, tutorials, case discussions, video sessions).
A number of bursaries will be available from different sources, including ILAE-CEA, UCB Nordic, the Peter & Jytte Wolf Foundation, and the German, Danish and Norwegian ILAE chapters. All those interested are encouraged to apply. Application deadline is May 31, 2009.
