EUREPA e-newsletter 3 / 2007The year 2007 is coming to an end soon, and it has been a very active year for Eurepa, and one that brought about many changes. I would like to take this opportunity to summarize the most important ones to you.
Many new individual members (44) were accepted at the two meetings of the Executive committee, and also the ILAE chapters of Bulgaria and Cyprus joined Eurepa this year, following Finland at the end of 2006. WELCOME!
The presentations of the breakfast seminars “Discussion on seizure related automatisms”, held at the International Congress on Epileptology in Singapore and organized by Executive Board member Prof. Maria Paola Canevini, can be found accessible to members on our website www.epilepsy-academy.org, on the VIREPA e-learning platform. If you do not already have a login & password, just register as a guest and we will automatically upgrade you to "user" and "member" status on the platform.
For the first time, Eurepa co-organized two new onsite courses in 2007, in which many members participated: the 1st Migrating Course on Epilepsy in Babe, Serbia, and the 1st Baltic Sea Summer School on Epilepsy, which took place in Druskininkai, Lithuania. Both courses were very successful, receiving very good evaluations, and will be repeated every year in another host country.
The 2nd Migrating Course on Epilepsy will take place in Trakai, Lithuania, June 1-8, 2008 - for information please see the website.VIREPA - the Virtual Epilepsy Academy also saw the start of two new blended distance edcuation courses (pilot projects in Neuroimaging and Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacotherapy) along with the repetition of the 'older' favorites:
- Neuroimaging was launched in Singapore and now has 19 participants; this pilot project will end shortly on December 17, 2007.
- Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacotherapy also began with a presence phase in Singapore, running until March 2008 with 14 participants involved.
- EEG basic II: a very fully booked second course with 29 students started in September and will end in March of 2008.
- Genetics IV: a fourth course started on October 15 with 20 participants and will run until the end of May 2008.
A Pan-European Train-the trainers course in English will take place from October 29 - November2, 2008, in Malta. Chapters with none or very few certified Eurepa trainers will be asked to nominate candidates.
2007 also saw the launch of this e-bulletin service and a new website design of Eurepa. The website www.epilepsy-academy.org offers information about Eurepa and its many activities, news, distance and onsite courses, network centers, trainers, accredited courses, the European Certification in Epileptology for Medical Doctors, etc.
The website also provides a calendar of events and announcements, among them for example the new Course on Epilepsy Surgery, taking place March 18-23 of next year in Brno, the Czech Republic, organized by the ILAE-CEA, Prof. Cigdem Özkara (cigdemoz@istanbul.edu.tr).
