FOURTH MIGRATING COURSE ON EPILEPSY

Serock, Poland, August 15 - 22, 2010

The educational initiative - "Migrating Course on Epilepsy" - has been started in 2007 to take place once a year in different European Countries. It is a clinically - oriented course, targeted to specialists at the second and third level of epilepsy care and focused on comprehensive aspects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.  The first course was organized in Serbia, the second in Lithuania, and the third course took place in the Czech Republic, all very successfully. The course is given in English.

Target audience:  The Migrating Course on Epilepsy is addressed to applicants providing care for patients with epilepsy and who wish to refine their skills in epileptology. Specialists in neurology, psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, pediatric neurology, pediatrics, clinical neurophysiology and psychology are welcome to apply.

Program

The faculty will again consist of leading European epileptologists, including members of the Commission of European Affairs.

The focus of the course is on comprehensive aspects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. It will also include the basic sciences in clinical epileptology issues and comprehensive care and rehabilitation of patients with epilepsy. Different issues of adult and pediatric epileptology will be covered.

Topics of tutorials: Differential diagnosis of epilepsy, Cognition and epilepsy, EEG, Genetics, Neuroimaging, Pharmacology of AEDs, Social aspects and rehabilitation, Status epilepticus.

The didactic format will promote the combination of lectures and interactive case discussion. Case oriented learning is emphasized. Didactic cases provided by tutors and case reports prepared by participants will be discussed in small group of participants.

Learning objectives: The course, on completion, will enable the participants to receive the up-to-date information and expert opinion on the main topics of clinical epileptology, to improve their competence and gain practical skills in the diagnostic work-up and decision-making concerning the management of different aspects of pediatric and adult epileptology. The tutorials held by experienced epileptologists through interactive education are expected to provoke vivid discussions and to stimulate critical diagnostic approach, especially regarding the EEG, neuroimaging and pharmacotherapy. Didactic cases provide by tutors in case-oriented learning will be useful to students in dealing with clinical problems in daily practice. By presenting their own case or scientific reports during the group sessions, the participants are encouraged to improve the competence and confidence in lecturing and teaching.

The teaching methodology is elaborated in cooperation with EUREPA and is based on interactive education and group work.

The Migrating Course on Epilepsy will be given in English.

The 4th Migrating Course on Epilepsy will take place in Serock, close to Warsaw, Poland, from August 15-22, 2010.

Maximal number is 36 to allow for an optimal level of interaction with the trainees.
Applicants will be selected by the Organizing Commitee of the Migrating Course on Epilepsy primarily on the basis of their case reports submitted.

European ILAE chapter members and applicants up to 45 years of age.

Bursaries will be available for successful applicants from the Commission on European Affairs, applicants are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to European applicants. The bursary regulary covers the registration fee and does not include travel expenses.

Please note that according to the decision on the Commission on European Affairs, only one bursary per year per person is possible, so recipients of other bursaries provided by the CEA in 2010 are not eligible for a bursary for this Migrating Course. Still they are welcome to participate with the payment of the registration fee.

1000 Euro

The fee includes accomodation (in twin room), full board, transfer airport-hotel-airport, handouts, and access to all educational activities (lectures, tutorials, case discussions, video sessions).

Some single room accomodations are available on advance request for an additional charge to be paid by the participant, which is not covered by the bursaries.

Application

Each candidate for the 4th Migrating Course on Epilepsy is required to submit:

  1. Application form (the need for a bursary should be indicated in it)
  2. Two case reports from student's clinical practice with patients with epilepsy, or one case report and one report on personal scientific research
  3. Curriculum vitae (CV) on max 2 pages, and a list of publications (max. 5 publications)
  4. Letter of intent (application letter)
  5. Recommendation from the national ILAE Chapter or the Head of the Department
Applications to the 4th Migrating Course should be submitted before the extended deadline of March 01, 2010.

NB: Please check if you need an entrance visa to Poland. If this is the case (only after official acceptance), please inform the organizers as soon as possible in order to timely start your visa preparations.

Case reports provided by students are expected to be:

  • specific and with some difficulties / problems in clinical semiology, diagnostics, classification and therapeutic strategy and possibly showing some unusual clinical features
  • it is recommended that case report includes questions addressed to audience for the discussion, and concluding student's answers, explanations and ideas to be presented after comments of a group

It is possible to provide one case report and one report on personal scientific research.

All reports will be evaluated by the Organizing Committee members. Its presentation will be organized in the small-group sessions.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CASE REPORT SUBMISSION

  • The report should be prepared as Power Point presentation, in English.
  • The first slide: title, applicant's name, the institution, city and country
  • The number of slides must be adapted to the length of presentation which is planned to be 25 minutes (including discussion)
  • It is recommended to use the font size and number of lines, adapted to the easy reading from the audience. Standard abbreviations may be used.
  • The case presentation should be informative, containing:
    1. introduction
    2. case report
    3. conclusion
    Drug Products should be identified by their non-proprietary names only
  • Video-sequence(s) EEG fragments, neuroimaging scans etc, if available should be included in the presentation
  • The reports on personal scientific research should include:
    1. introduction
    2. aims
    3. methods
    4. results
    5. discussion
    6. conclusions
  • Authors are responsible for the linguistic accuracy and ethical standards
  • All presentations will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee
  • Case reports prepared as PPT presentation, or adapted in a PDF format should be sent by email to Petra Novotny  as soon as possible.

Certification:
Applicants who successfully fulfill the program will receive a certificate. The MCE is accredited by EUREPA and integrated in the European Certification in Epileptology for Medical Doctors.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by May 1st, 2010, as far as possible.
